Many times we are asked: “What is the purpose of a rotating bezel on a watch?” A rotating bezel can help with navigation by using the watch face as a sundial and determining a southerly direction with the help of the watch hand. It works like this. The hour hand points toward the sun and the angle between the hour hand and the 12 o’clock mark is halved. The angle bisector now points directly south. In the southern hemisphere, of course, north and south must be swapped.
