Solar Weathervane – Our Solar Airplane Weathervane adds a new dimension to weathervane use. With this Solar Airplane Weathervane you can see the wind direction during the day, but now, you can also see the wind direction at night! Here’s how it works. The solar powered airplane weathervane has solar cells on each wing which charges the interior battery during the day. At night, the airplane has lights illuminated on the wing tips, nose, and the passenger windows in the fuselage so you can see the direction of the plane pointed into the wind. With a full charge, the lights will stay on for about 5 hours.

The shape of the Solar Airplane Weathervane is modeled after the Lockheed Super Constellation also known as the Connie. The Connie aircraft is distinguished by a triple-tail design and dolphin-shaped fuselage. It is probably most well known for providing first class service for all in the early days of commercial aviation earning the name “Queen of the Skies.” It was also the official presidential aircraft for President Eisenhower.

Nancy’s Notes: When I first saw the photo of this product I thought it looked really nice. When we received our sample I learned that the plane, directionals etc. were composed of plastic and I was concerned about the weathervane standing up to the elements. Nevertheless, it was installed on top of our garage. The first time my husband saw the airplane at night with the lights on he was so impressed he said that Tailwinds absolutely had to sell this weathervane. Still wanting to know more about its durability, the manufacturer was contacted and the company advised that they had had their Solar Airplane Weathervane outside for 2-years in the wind, rain and snow and it had proven to withstand the weather without problems. I think this is a fun, unique weathervane.

The airplane is silver-grey, measuring about 19" long with about a 21 ¼" wingspan and the propellers turn with a breeze. The weathervane stands about 28" high with 3 ¼" high directionals. Assembly is fairly easy with enclosed directions. Screws will be needed for final mounting installation. The Solar Airplane Weathervane has a one year manufacturer’s warranty and the solar cells should last about 5-years.
