The Boeing YAL-1 Airborne Laser has a megawatt-class chemical oxygen iodine laser (COIL) mounted inside a modified Boeing 747-400F. The YAL-1A is a high-energy laser weapon system for the destruction of tactical theatre ballistic missiles, which is carried on a modified Boeing 747-400F freighter aircraft. The Airborne Laser (ABL) is being developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory and Team ABL, comprising Boeing, TRW and Lockheed Martin. The YAL-1's primary function is to destroy tactical ballistic missiles (TBMs), similar to the Scud, while in boost phase.
